This article seeks to establish a clear definition of political Islam by examining its essence, analyzing its origins, growth, and fluctuations, and understanding the rationale behind its emergence. It further illustrates the nature of political Islam by delineating various Islamist movements and their defining characteristics. The study posits that, contrary to prevailing theories, political Islam is not a novel phenomenon but has existed since before the advent of modernity, enduring to the present day with distinct features. The significance of this research lies in its critical examination of prominent theories on political Islam and the presentation of a definition derived from them, which clarifies the boundary between political Islam and the distorted conceptions advanced to promote Islam phobia.
Employing the process-tracing method alongside a systematic review of definitions and theories of political Islam, this study reconstructs the concept’s historical trajectory, identifying its inception, pivotal turning points, and key factors influencing its rise and decline. As a methodological tool, process tracing facilitates data collection, analysis, and theory development, enabling the evaluation of evidence to explain the proposed hypothesis. The findings demonstrate that "political Islam," though a modern term, represents a long-standing concept with specific characteristics. Its strategies have evolved in response to temporal conditions, manifesting differently across periods in accordance with the exigencies of time and place.
