One of the most significant strategies employed by governments to alter global perceptions of themselves is through the use of sports diplomacy. However, some efforts in this domain fall under the concept of “sportswashing” rather than sports diplomacy. Sportswashing refers to the instrumental use of sports to improve a country's international image and mitigate political and human rights pressures. In light of this distinction, the present study aims to examine the effectiveness of Saudi Arabia's sports-oriented strategy by addressing the following question: Is Saudi Arabia's sports strategy a sustainable diplomatic approach or merely a temporary tool for reshaping its international image? By analyzing Saudi Arabia's sports initiatives and comparing them with similar historical cases, this study evaluates the effectiveness of this strategy within the country's foreign policy. The findings, derived from a meticulous examination of sports-related documentation and research, suggest that while Saudi Arabia's sporting endeavors have led to an enhancement in diplomatic interactions and a reinforcement of its standing within international sports institutions in the short term, the question of its long-term efficacy remains unresolved. This is primarily due to the potential for sportswashing, which refers to the utilization of sports for political advancement and casts a shadow over the long-term implications of this approach.
