The Internet of Things (IoT), as one of the most significant advancements in information technology, has profound implications for various social and security dimensions of societies. This technology, particularly in developing countries like Iran, has notable consequences for social security. The expansion of IoT in Iran, while offering opportunities such as increased efficiency, improved urban management, and the development of smart services, has also introduced considerable security challenges. In this context, the main question of this research is: What opportunities and challenges does IoT present for the social security of the Islamic Republic of Iran? The central hypothesis posits that, on the one hand, IoT facilitates surveillance, control, and big data analysis, thereby enhancing public security and reducing organized crime. On the other hand, the growing dependence on IoT increases threats such as cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, violations of citizens’ privacy, and the misuse of personal data by state and non-state actors. Additionally, the lack of comprehensive legal frameworks and weak cybersecurity policies have exacerbated structural vulnerabilities in Iran. Adopting an exploratory approach, this study examines the impact of IoT on Iran’s social security and, by analyzing the associated security challenges, demonstrates that ensuring social security in this context requires multi-layered strategies, including the formulation of protective policies, public awareness enhancement, and the strengthening of national cybersecurity infrastructures. Ultimately, this study provides practical solutions to optimize IoT utilization for enhancing social security and mitigating potential threats.
