The Role of Foreign Aids in Economic and Social Development of Afghanistan

Abstract

As US and NATO troops entered Afghanistan in 2001, reconstruction assistance teams came to Afghanistan, and the international community has spent more than $ 130 billion to rebuild Afghanistan over the years. This study aimed to investigate the role of external assistance in socio-economic development of Afghanistan, considering nine indicators of socio-economic development as dependent variables and evaluated them in the light of theories of modernization and dependency schools and secondary data analysis. The results of the hypotheses test, analyzed by SPSS software, showed that the relationship between the independent variable of external aid and GDP variables, per capita income, life expectancy, education, population growth and human development, is significant and positive, whereas the relationship between external aid and variables of Security and Drug Reduction improvement, proved insignificant. The impact of independent variable on unemployment rate was negative. Therefore, foreign aids did not improve Security, Unemployment and Drug Abuse in Afghanistan; but it improved access to Educational and Health services.
