Abstract

Women, who had been among the marginalized ones in the course of history and in Iran, have gradually turned into activists in social, political and cultural arenas, particularly after the victory of the Islamic Revolution. Overall, there are three main approaches to women’s presence in the society and in the public sphere in Iran. The first one is the traditional approach that lays emphasis on women’s role mainly as “housewife”, “motherhood” and “child rearing”. The second approach encompasses a spectrum of feminist approaches. This approach mainly focuses on the equality of men and women. The third approach, which is based on Imam Khomeini’s viewpoints, besides agreeing with the differences between men and women, believes in an outstanding role for women in the public arena, while is mindful of women’s role as mother and wife. The main problem of this article is to discover the components of women’s empowerment in Imam Khomeini’s viewpoints based on the components offered by Sara Lange. The theoretical framework used for this research is Sara Lange’s theory of Women’s Empowerment. The necessary data were collected through library method and analyzed through descriptive-analytical method. The findings of the research, based on facts and figures, show that effective steps have been taken for the empowerment of women in different arenas, although, the Iranian society still needs more steps for the empowerment of women.
